History

In 2005, a small group of attorneys in Minneapolis met for lunch to discuss their vision for a more vibrant, diverse, and inclusive legal community. They understood that systemic change is impossible to achieve through the individual advocacy of one attorney, but by pooling their resources and focusing collective energy, employers could more successfully attract, recruit, advance, and retain attorneys of color. Building on these early conversations, Representatives from Briggs and Morgan (now Taft), Dorsey & Whitney, Faegre & Benson (now Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath), Fredrikson & Byron, and Gray Plant Mooty Mooty & Bennett (now Lathrop GPM) established what was initially called the Twin Cities Lawyers Group.

In 2007, the Twin Cities Lawyers Group formally became Twin Cities Diversity in Practice (TCDIP). Since the group’s founding, membership has grown to include over 70 employers, including small and large law firms and in-house legal departments. TCDIP now supports two law-student-hiring pipeline programs, diversity- and inclusion-focused CLEs, networking events throughout the year, and regular updates about best practices in the diversity and inclusion sphere.
