This past weekend, Minnesota suffered an unthinkable tragedy. Two of our public servants and their families were targeted in politically motivated shootings. We mourn the loss of House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and we extend our deepest hopes for healing to State Representative John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who are recovering from their injuries.
We share in the grief of all Minnesotans in this heartbreaking moment. Our hearts are with the families and communities forever changed by this violence. Twin Cities Diversity in Practice and WILD condemn this weekend’s assassination and all acts of political violence. We want to make it clear that these attacks are not only personal—they are an assault on the democratic institutions and civil discourse that make our communities strong. As a legal community, we are grounded in the rule of law, and we remain unwavering in our belief that justice must never be pursued through fear or force.
TCDIP is about community, especially in moments when we must lean on one another and stand together. We are committed to a legal community—and a society—where safety, respectful discourse, and peaceful resolution are not just shared values but shared responsibilities that we uphold with unwavering commitment.
We understand that this is a difficult time. Many of us are feeling fear, anger, and confusion. You are not alone. In the coming days, we will activate our Trauma Response Plan to provide grief support and offer opportunities for the community to gather. Until then, if you or someone you know needs support, please get in touch with Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers at 651-646-5590 or 866-525-6466 for 24/7 assistance. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is also available at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
